first swim

Mason,

Even though Daddy and I have lived in DC for nearly 12 years, I've rarely and he's never taken advantage of one use of our DC tax dollars: the public swimming pools. One of the pools 10 blocks from our house was recently renovated and it's really nice now. There are slides, a floating alligator, fountains, and a fenced-in baby pool. The best part is that it's only open to DC residents and it's free! We strolled there today and took you for your first swim.

You actually loved the adult pool more than the baby pool. You splashed and kicked and smiled and got water in your face several times. Count on spending much more time at the pool this summer.

Happy swimming!

Love,

Mommy

month 9: reflections

Mason,

Happy nine months, buddy. It's been an eventful month! Mommy is still working, but she's at home pretty much 100% now. It's a good thing, too, because you're doing something different each week. You're at such a fun age!

At the beginning of the month, you could pick up some food with your fingers, but hadn't quite mastered getting it into your mouth. One morning, you tried to eat some of Daddy's banana by putting your mouth on the plate.

Then, all of a sudden, you seemed to get the hang of feeding yourself. You look like a little ape when you do it. It's precious. We've sampled all the green and orange vegetables and allowable fruits that we can think of. You've also tried bread, black beans, and tofu. It's on to meat, cheese, and yogurt next month.

We went to a park with infant swings. You liked it, but the swinging relaxed you so much you nearly fell asleep.

We've declared a "no chores or errands" policy on the weekends so that we can get out and enjoy ourselves a little more. Besides the park and picnics, we sometimes go to coffee shops

or monuments.

We tend to be minimalists with "stuff". Who wants or needs a bunch of toys when there are laundry baskets,

empty canisters,

and measuring cups? (Way to be creative with the measuring cup, Sweetie! You play that guitar!)

You seem to love books and reading more each week. You get so excited when we lie down to read.

Look at that joyous face! Little Ladybug is your favorite book.

We are anti-shoes (for you) this summer. When else in your life will you ever be able to go barefoot anyplace you want?

You continue to be a pretty good communicator and babble constantly, saying baba, wawa, mama, and dada, but we don't think you associate meaning with any words yet. The dadas have exploded in recent weeks, much to Daddy's delight. You're very clear when you'd like to be picked up.

On June 4th, you amazed us by turning over on your tummy in your crib (when you were mad and crying it out) and falling asleep that way. Your tummy is no longer a terrible, awful place. You roll around and spend a lot of time on your tummy now. You have the baby cobra pose down.

You inherited Mommy's under bite. We call you our little bulldog.

You make funny faces.

We still see hints of our beloved little grouch,

but your personality has really come a long way!

Your sleep has been more disrupted this month than it has been since you began sleeping through the night, when you were eight weeks old. We think the separation anxiety combined with your will growing stronger has resulted in your fighting bedtimes and some naps and waking up in the middle of the night. You've even weaseled your way into our bed a couple of nights, which is horrible for all of us because you pull hair, scratch our faces, and hog the bed.

We're tired, yes, but we realize that this stage, like any other, has its pluses and minuses, and even the negatives aren't that bad. They won't last forever, and we even suspect that we'll miss them one day.

These months are flying by, sweet Mason! You continue to amaze and astound us. We never considered ourselves "kid people" before you arrived, but having your own child is different. We think you are just the cutest and most interesting little person. And we're so thankful you're all ours. Love you more and more each day!

Hugs and kisses,

Mommy and Daddy

nine-month sticker

Mason,

You're nine months old!

You weigh 19 pounds, 14 ounces (25th-50th percentile).

You're 29.25 inches long (75th-90th percentile).

You're long and lean, except for the cheeks!

You're healthy, and we're happy. Love you, Cupcake!

XOXO,

Mommy

Father's Day

Mason,

Today we celebrated my first Father's Day! We had a great weekend as a family, spending Saturday on the National Mall and enjoying a picnic in Lincoln Park on Sunday after church. Of course, you had to dress appropriately for church.

But then daddy got to dress you for the picnic, and look how cute you look in Tennessee orange!

Of course, this isn't the first time you've looked so good. Father's Day seems like as good a time as any to show off a couple of my favorite Tennessee-themed pictures.

You were kind enough to get me a card for Father's Day. Of course, as soon as I had opened it, you found alternative uses for it. That's ok. I don't mind sharing! You also got me a gift card to my favorite coffee shop, which should come in handy the next time you decide to keep me up most of the night.

Mason, it's hard to express what a thrill celebrating Father's Day with you and Mommy is. I'm so thankful that God blessed us with you and made this day possible. And hopefully I'll get better with this daddy thing as we go along. On the other hand, your Mommy and I have been joking about how long a busy weekend with you will feel like a celebration. Don't be offended if I decide sneaking away for a round of golf with friends is a more relaxing way to celebrate this special day in the future. Although, come to think of it, I guess it's already started. Your big gift to me was tickets for a show at the Kennedy Center. Nothing says "happy Father's Day" like a chance to get away! I kid of course.

Thanks for a wonderful first Father's Day! You certainly know how to make a daddy feel special.

Love,
Daddy

National Mall and Carousel

Mason,

To kick off Father's Day weekend, we grabbed breakfast at Eastern Market. Yes, you and Daddy are dressed alike. That's my fault. I insisted!

After your morning nap, we headed down to the National Mall, where you took your first ride on the carousel.

Then, we walked to some of the monuments.

Here you are at the World War II Memorial, in front of your home state pillar.

The Lincoln Memorial has always been one of our favorites.

We played and snacked on a blanket under some shade.

And then we rode the carousel again. Once just wasn't enough.

What a fun day and a great kickoff to Daddy's special weekend!

XOXO,

Mommy

memorable picture revisited

Mason,

Our last stop on the Illinois tour was the state capitol in Springfield. You see, ten years ago, this moment was captured there.

We took you there to get an updated picture. A lot has changed, huh?

Hugs and kisses,

Mommy

Mark Twain country

Mason,

We kept pretty busy on our visit to Illinois. One day, we went to Hannibal, Missouri, to tour the Mark Twain sights. This was a meaningful excursion because I read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer right before you were born, and had started The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn on September 12th, five days before your birth. I remember thinking that I'd easily finish Huck at the hospital while I was in labor. I mean, what else would I have to do? HA! My labor was plenty long enough to finish the book, but the last thing I was able to focus on was classic literature. I finished reading good old Huck about two months after you were born.

Daddy had never been to Hannibal, so we had a ball touring the cave and other sights. I can't resist photo opportunities like this one.

Dada showed you the mighty Mississippi at Lover's Leap.

My home state, Illinois, is across the river behind us.

Grandma and Grandpa were nice enough to haul all of us around all day, and to listen to your grouching in the car. (Side note: this trip made it evident that you're not used to riding in the car very often or for very long. You're such a city baby!)

We toured homes and buildings that were a part of Mark Twain's tales.

May you come to know, appreciate, and love great literature, Mason. If you end up being a book lover like your mama, we can say that it all started with Tom and Huck.

Love you!

Mommy

Mommy's extended family

Mason,

You met a crew of people on our visit to Illinois.

Uncle Luke and Kim popped into town to see you.

The "big kids" fascinated you. You watched Peter, Daniel, James, and Elizabeth as they raced circles through Grandpa and Grandma's big farmhouse. How you longed to join them!

Here you are with Ryan, your second cousin.

You also posed with Great Aunt Nancy and Great Uncle Steve.

And Great Uncle Jim and Great Aunt Susie.

The big kids paid a lot of attention to you, and they wanted you to run with the pack as much as you did.  The most memorable moment of the day occurred when four-year-old Daniel, the youngest "big kid", came up to me, frustrated, and asked, "When's Mason going to grow up?"

Now Cupcake, if you know anything at all about your mommy by now, you know exactly what this question did to my heart. I resisted the urge to shriek, "Hush your mouth, Daniel!" and instead, replied, "Daniel. Mason IS growing up! Every single minute, he's growing. Just like you are. He's growing too fast for me, just like you are for your mommy and daddy." Daniel looked at me, smiled, and nodded. He understood. And then he ran off to run with the big kids again.

You'll be running with the pack before Daddy and I are ready for it.

I love you!

Mommy
