two

Mason,

It's true--you're two! And it's also true that your birthday leaves us feeling like we've been run over by a truck. Or several trucks. We do lots of celebrating!

First, both sets of grandparents visited, one right after the other, and you enjoyed presents, outings, and lots of love and attention from them.

The weekend before your actual birthday, we had a cookout with a few of your friends and their families.

We may not throw the most elaborate birthday parties, but Mommy hopes to always make your birthday cake. She went simple last year by just making a little smash cake. This year, she felt a little more adventurous.

This train cake was a huge hit with you and your guests. Here you are yelling, "Hurray, choo choo cake!"

Like last year, you dug into your cake and savored every morsel. This moment truly seems to be a highlight of your year.

We gave you a hip play kitchen for your birthday. With cherry cabinets, granite counter tops, and stainless steel appliances, your kitchen is more in style than ours! Your sheer delight at finding it made our being up until midnight and the five hours it took to put together the kitchen's 150 parts all worth it.

You cook while Mommy cooks. You say, "May's oven" and point to yours and, "Mommy's oven" and point to ours. You do appreciate having your own cooking space.

Daddy had to work on your actual birthday, so Mommy took you to the Museum of Natural History's Butterfly Pavilion. You love butterflies, but were pretty freaked out by how big some of them were and how close they got. (They landed on people! But thankfully, not on us, or you would have certainly lost it.) This was as close as you would voluntarily get to any of the butterflies.

You gazed across the Sculpture Garden's pool toward the National Archives and contemplated what it means to be two.

Then, we visited Daddy for lunch, or munch, as you call it. There's nothing like celebrating a birthday at the Longworth Cafeteria!

Here are some fun facts that we'd like to remember about you at age two:

  • You've been speaking in sentences for a couple of months. Your language development is exploding and we enjoy hearing new words and phrases from you every day.
  • You can say your first and last names, but you still prefer to call yourself May, as you've been doing for a few months now.
  • You weigh 31 pounds (75th-90th percentile) and are 36.25 inches tall (90th percentile), but we think the height estimate may be slightly generous. The nurse said you're in good health and are developmentally on track. Praise God for all of that!
  • You're in the throes of separation anxiety, round two, which makes drop off at the church nursery a most unpleasant experience for everyone involved.
  • Your moods vary between friendly, playful, and sweet, to bossy, angry, and melting down all within minutes. You throw fits out of nowhere about the most random, irrational things. It's true--you're two!
  • You are utterly confident around and don't seem to be at all intimidated by other children (older and younger) and adults. We hope that confidence never fades.
  • Considering you were such a grouchy, unfriendly baby your first few months of life, we're completely shocked that you can be a pretty friendly and outgoing little guy now. You've always been sweet, though. Thankfully, that hasn't changed.
  • Your memory astounds us.
  • You run like the wind.
  • You can be quite bossy! If no one's in the room to serve you, we sometimes overhear you giving orders to and fighting with your toys.
  • You've demonstrated musical interest and ability for a while now. You began humming soon after you turned one and have been outright singing, on key, for months. Having already covered most children's songs, beloved church hymns, and our favorites from Les Miserables, Mommy recently taught you some songs from The Sound of Music. You picked up and memorized do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti, within a couple of days and now regularly request "the do do song" as you call it. Voice lessons may be in your future!
  • Zerberts are still your definition of kisses, which we find incredibly endearing.
  • Airplanes, helicopters, trains, and trucks still make your day.
  • We're working on colors, counting, and letters. You haven't mastered any of these categories yet, but you're making progress.
  • You've inherited Mommy's good sense of direction and spend car rides and walks accurately telling us where Aldi, Giant, deep water (swimming pool), library, church, coffee, choo choos, and DeeDee's (Davis's) house are.
  • Months of training and consistent discipline at the grocery store have paid off, and you're now a helpful, obedient little shopper. Yes, you're now allowed to get out of the cart and walk and help! Grocery shopping is a highlight of your week.
  • Even though you inherited Mommy's hair, eye, and skin coloring, plenty of people still say you look a lot like Daddy. We think you are a perfect combination of both of us, both in looks and personality. We also think you're super cute!

What a wild ride these two years have been, sweet Mason. We miss having a little baby, but even with your moodiness, bossiness, and tantrums, you're definitely a lot more fun now that you're older. We love watching you learn, grow, and develop, and being a part of all of it. You are our world, sweet boy, and there's not a day that goes by that we're not incredibly thankful to have you as a part of our family.

Happy second birthday, Mason! May God bless you to see many, many more.

We love you bunches!

XOXO,

Mommy and Daddy

happy first birthday!

Mason,

Happy first birthday, Sweetheart! We made it. Hooray!!

We celebrated your very special day by taking you to the zoo. Daddy took the day off work, and we all had a blast together.

Yes, you're officially a toddler now, but you'll always be Daddy's and my baby.

You noticed the animals on this visit.

sea lion

elephant

cheetah

You marched around like you owned the place.

At 12:10 PM, the time of your birth, we paused for a quick picture and to sing happy birthday as you officially turned one.

We went out to lunch.

And you opened Daddy's and my presents to you when we got home.

This past year has been joyous, demanding, blissful, agonizing, loving, challenging, bittersweet, heart warming, and heart wrenching. It's been a wild ride, Cupcake. You're a handful, but we love your energy and snap, even though both of those personality traits get you in trouble sometimes. Thanks for being such a perfect little guy for us. Each day with you is truly a blessing, and not one that we take for granted.

And for now, Daddy and I are kind of birthday-ed out. Thank goodness we have a whole year to recover before the next one!

Love you always!

birthday cookout

Mason,

Your first birthday is only two days away, and this evening we had a celebration for you with a few of your baby friends and their mommies and daddies. I made cupcakes and a little smash cake for you.

The day was beautiful and we set up outside in our yard.

You had fun with your peeps.

We sang happy birthday.

And you attacked the cake.

You did not hesitate for one second. It was like you had been waiting for this moment your entire life. You could not scoop those handfuls of icing into your mouth fast enough. It was hilarious to watch.

You ate much more icing than cake, but you still did some damage to my masterpiece. Well done, Sweetie!

Love you!

one week old

Mason,

To celebrate your turning one week old, we left the house. Daddy carried you to the farmers market behind our house in the Baby Bjorn. We go to the farmers market every Saturday morning during the market's season. This is your first of many trips!

We gave you a tour of our usually beautiful, but now much neglected back yard on our way home after the market.

Then we hopped in the car and drove down to my favorite annual DC event: the National Book Festival.  Usually I attend this event in its entirety. This year, that wasn't possible, but I still wanted you to make an appearance at your first book festival, and to pick up a poster and take a family picture. An extremely nice DC parking enforcement officer allowed us to park illegally right near the festival so that we could hop out for a few minutes.

We couldn't help but snap your first picture in front of the United States Capitol on our way back to the car. You live in an amazing city, Mason!

We're looking forward to many more fun outings in the future!

Love,

Mommy

your birth

Mason,

Daddy and I always joked during pregnancy that you seemed to be an obedient baby. You cooperated during ultrasounds. Your growth was always right on target, if not a bit ahead of where you should have been. You plumped up nice and healthy in the womb. You allowed me to finish working through the date I committed to (September 9th). You let Daddy get through the Congressional hearing he was in charge of, which coincidentally fell on your due date (September 14th).

My first week of maternity leave, which began on September 12th, I walked and ran in earnest, trying to move you along toward being born. I ran two miles that week, and walked 16 miles. Then, on Friday, September 16th, I made and ate an Atlanta restaurant's eggplant parmigiana that's famous for sending women into labor. In retrospect, I wasn't feeling well on that Friday anyway. And, I don't know if the excessive walking/running that week or the eggplant parmigiana had their intended effects, but you decided to start making your way the afternoon of Friday, September 16th. But again, you proved yourself to be an accommodating baby. You allowed Daddy to finish up his work week and he arrived home at a normal time on Friday evening. Then you kicked it into high gear, but not before you allowed us to finish up some last minute chores around the house while I labored. We finished packing our hospital bags, ran the dishwasher, washed a load of towels, collected and disposed of the garbage, and even wrote a few thank you notes, which we mailed on our drive to the hospital!

You even granted us time and energy to take one last picture as we left the house shortly after midnight on Saturday, September 17th. We set up the shot in the living room and used the timer on our camera.

Upon arriving at the hospital, we learned that the Lord, and you, truly have perfect timing. Apparently, many babies decided to be born the weekend you were, and the labor and delivery unit had been crazy earlier that evening. They ran out of rooms and women had to labor in the hospital's waiting room. But, we arrived during a lull, and were lucky enough to get a room. We heard that things picked up again a few hours after we arrived, so we were thankful that the timing worked out just right.

Daddy and I walked the hospital halls, and then I got the magic drugs by 4 AM, which allowed Daddy and me to sleep for a few hours. The nurse woke us up at 7 AM, broke my water, and we went back to sleep until 9 AM. Things moved along pretty quickly after that; I started pushing at 11:19 AM, and you were born at 12:10 PM. Apparently, you wanted to make your appearance before the Tennessee Vols took on the Florida Gators at 3:30 PM. It was the perfect day, even though this was probably the first TN/FL game in years that Daddy didn't get to attend or even watch, but he didn't care about missing it one bit. My, how quickly priorities change!

Your cord was wrapped around your neck, but you were fine, and started crying soon after the doctor got you untangled. A minute after you were born, they plopped you on my chest. Daddy was standing over my left shoulder, and when you heard his voice, you arched your neck to look back to find him. You knew your daddy's voice. Our hearts have not been the same since that moment.

We love you and we're glad you're here!

Mommy

happy birthday

Welcome to the world, Mason McNeil!

You arrived on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 12:10 p.m.

You weighed nine pounds, six ounces, and you were 21 inches long.

The nurse put the Vitamin K drops in your eyes right away, so your eyes are a little red in the next two pictures.

Daddy and I couldn't be more delighted to have you here, sweet Mason.

We love you!
