apple picking

Mason,

We were in the mood for some fall fun today: apple picking.

Reliving my childhood, I scampered up a tree. Daddy handed you up to me so that you could pick your first apple.

It was a beautiful day to spend in the country.

Happy fall!

National Book Festival

Mason,

You've discovered the joy of reading, Darling, which makes me incredibly happy! May your love of books never fade.

Last year, you were exactly one week old when you attended your first National Book Festival. This year was a different experience. You're two for two with this festival, Sweetie!

Much to our surprise, you writhed with excitement when you spotted the furry PBS characters. We recognized a few characters from your books, but we didn't know most of them because we don't watch TV. But you were so excited, we had to stand in line to meet as many characters as we could.

However, once you got close to the furry friends, your excitement turned to fear.

You did okay with Clifford.

But not so well with George.

Reading to you every day is fun. Watching your love for books abound is joyous. Looking forward to celebrating the joy of reading daily, as well as each year at the book festival, with you.

Happy reading, Mason!

Love,

Mommy

month 12: reflections

Mason,

Here we are again--12 months!

This month you turned into a cruising fool.

When you're not cruising, you insist (by yelling and screaming--yes, your temper is still quick and hot... even the pediatrician commented on it at your check-up) that we walk you around. We've become your personal walkers. You don't crawl (except for the occasional army crawl when you are really desperate) so we are instrumental to your exploring.

Sometimes you unexpectedly let go and toddle 3-4 steps to us. At the park, we've gotten you to walk 8-10 steps at a time unassisted. You're not quite ready to walk independently yet. You're a bit of a scaredy cat.

You love the park. We make at least one trip there each day.

We often find you sitting up in your crib now, procrastinating on going to sleep.

Your thumb is by far your bestie. Laying your head on one of our shoulders and sucking your thumb is your new favorite position.

You're such a little stinker sometimes!

The kitchen cabinets are fascinating. You love to peer inside, but don't bother the items there too much yet.

You gesture toward whatever you want. You say Mama, Dada, and hi, and we think you can say "down" ("da", while lunging down out of our arms). You sign for milk and up. You clap and wave. You're full of tricks!

You are the joy of our lives!

We love you more than words can express.

Congrats on making it through your 12th month, sweet Mason! And congrats to us, too!:) Now we understand why so many parents throw rip-roaring first birthday parties. What an accomplishment for all three of us!

Love you forever!

Mommy and Daddy

happy first birthday!

Mason,

Happy first birthday, Sweetheart! We made it. Hooray!!

We celebrated your very special day by taking you to the zoo. Daddy took the day off work, and we all had a blast together.

Yes, you're officially a toddler now, but you'll always be Daddy's and my baby.

You noticed the animals on this visit.

sea lion

elephant

cheetah

You marched around like you owned the place.

At 12:10 PM, the time of your birth, we paused for a quick picture and to sing happy birthday as you officially turned one.

We went out to lunch.

And you opened Daddy's and my presents to you when we got home.

This past year has been joyous, demanding, blissful, agonizing, loving, challenging, bittersweet, heart warming, and heart wrenching. It's been a wild ride, Cupcake. You're a handful, but we love your energy and snap, even though both of those personality traits get you in trouble sometimes. Thanks for being such a perfect little guy for us. Each day with you is truly a blessing, and not one that we take for granted.

And for now, Daddy and I are kind of birthday-ed out. Thank goodness we have a whole year to recover before the next one!

Love you always!

Mommy

12-month sticker

Mason,

And here we are at the end of the package--your last sticker. Thank goodness. You were a big grouch during this photo shoot, and I'm not sure that either of us could take another one.

We can now retire the stickers and the duckie sleeper. They both have served us well this past year!

At 12 months, you weigh 22 pounds, 7 ounces, which falls in the 25th-50th percentile range. You're 30.75 inches long, which is the 75th percentile. You're still long and lean, except for those cheeks!

Thanks for being a trooper with the monthly sticker photo shoots, Cupcake. We're done!

I love you!

birthday cookout

Mason,

Your first birthday is only two days away, and this evening we had a celebration for you with a few of your baby friends and their mommies and daddies. I made cupcakes and a little smash cake for you.

The day was beautiful and we set up outside in our yard.

You had fun with your peeps.

We sang happy birthday.

And you attacked the cake.

You did not hesitate for one second. It was like you had been waiting for this moment your entire life. You could not scoop those handfuls of icing into your mouth fast enough. It was hilarious to watch.

You ate much more icing than cake, but you still did some damage to my masterpiece. Well done, Sweetie!

Love you!

Mommy
